Causes of dental handpiece noise

1.Mechanical operation and airflow friction
The high-speed turbine inside the dental handpiece (up to 200,000-400,000 rpm) generates high-frequency vibration when it rotates, and the friction of the compressed-air-driven turbine also creates noise, especially in the low-frequency range.

2.Aging or improper maintenance of equipment

Worn bearings or lack of oil: long-term use or insufficient lubrication will lead to increased bearing friction, resulting in rustling or whistling;

Blunted turning needles: Blunted turning needles require more pressure to cut teeth, increasing equipment load and vibration;

Clogged water supply system: clogged water mist nozzles may cause uneven water flow, triggering additional noise.

3.Improper operation
Operations such as sideways force, overloading or failure to replace the lathe needle in time can increase mechanical vibration and noise.
